Suspected Simultaneous Terror Incidents in US: Virginia University Shooting, Michigan Synagogue Ramming
Shooting Incident at Old Dominion University, Virginia
Last Thursday around 11 AM, a shooting occurred at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The incident, which took place during an ROTC class, resulted in the death of one retired Army officer and injuries to two others. The shooter was identified as Mohammed Jalloh, who had a prior conviction in the US for attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Jalloh reportedly entered the building, located where the ROTC class was being held, and then opened fire, shouting 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack. He was subsequently subdued by students and died after being stabbed.
Vehicle Ramming Incident at Michigan Synagogue
On the afternoon of the same day, an incident also took place at Temple Israel, one of the largest synagogues in the US, located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. A suspect drove a truck into the synagogue, and explosives in the vehicle detonated, causing a fire. A security guard on site fatally shot the rifle-wielding suspect. Dozens of preschool children and teachers were inside the building at the time but were all safely evacuated. During this process, eight first responders received treatment for injuries. The suspect's body was severely disfigured, making identification difficult; the individual is presumed to have resided in nearby Dearborn.
FBI's Terror-Related Investigation and Context
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating both incidents as terror-related events. While the two incidents are not directly linked, the FBI stated that heightened tensions in the Middle East, including military operations targeting Iran, Israeli operations in Lebanon, and Iranian attacks in the region, are increasing the domestic terror threat. Considering that past terror attacks linked to Al-Qaeda or ISIS often targeted 'soft targets,' vigilance has been heightened for densely populated facilities, such as those belonging to the Jewish community. Many synagogues are enhancing their own security protocols in addition to collaborating with government agencies.
