Iran Considers Agreement to Halt War with US, Outlines Position
Iran is reportedly considering a draft agreement to cease hostilities with the United States. However, after US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations were ongoing, Iranian media reported on Tuesday that there had been no contact with Washington for several days. More than three months after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran, the conflict remains in a stalemate, with an uneasy truce persisting and maritime traffic in the crucial Strait of Hormuz largely blocked.
Iran has not yet responded to the final draft of the interim arrangement and is taking a "tough" approach, considering the history of American non-compliance and long-standing distrust, Mehr news agency quoted sources as saying. Semi-official Fars news agency also cited sources, adding that messages regarding a potential deal (memorandum of understanding) had ceased several days ago, with the last one being Tehran's "clear message" concerning Lebanon, where Iran is demanding a halt to Israeli incursions against its ally Hezbollah.
Negotiation Status and Key Issues
Trump stated on Monday that negotiations were continuing and that an arrangement to extend the ceasefire, agreed upon in early April, and reopen the strait would be reached within the next week. Since mid-April, Trump has repeatedly stated that he is close to an agreement that would postpone thorny issues, including Iran's nuclear program. While the ceasefire has largely held since early April, Iran and the United States have exchanged attacks multiple times over the past week.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers on the 27th that Iran had agreed to negotiate on its nuclear program, which it had previously rejected, but added that this did not guarantee the negotiations would lead to an agreement. Rubio, who also serves as Trump's national security adviser, said that the initial conditions for the discussions were for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz and to agree to negotiate on its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
