London Protests Against Israel's New Death Penalty Law
London Protests: International Condemnation of Palestinian Death Penalty Law
On March 31, a large protest took place outside Downing Street in London against Israel's new death penalty bill. The law makes the death penalty the default sentence for Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks in the occupied West Bank, but Jewish Israelis who kill Palestinians do not face the same penalty, drawing significant criticism. Countries including the UK, Germany, France, and Italy have strongly opposed the legislation. Human rights groups argue that the law discriminates against Palestinians and is another tool of Israeli apartheid.
Calls for Action from the UK Government
Protesters gathered to send a message to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the UK needs to do more than merely condemn the law. They warned that a failure to act could lead to the killing of hundreds of Palestinians. One demonstrator questioned why Israel is allowed to be an exceptional case where humanitarian and international law does not apply, urging global intervention. The sentiment among many is that this is part of Israel's plan to ethnically cleanse more of the occupied Palestinian territories.
