Russia Denies Blame for Romania Drone Crash, UN Warns of Escalation
Russia Denies Responsibility for Drone Crash, Accuses West
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, on June 1, denied accusations against Moscow regarding a drone crash in Romania. He asserted that the incident is being exploited by Western countries to instigate a new 'anti-Russian wave.' Nebenzya emphasized that it was no coincidence the drone crash occurred just one day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested US President Donald Trump to increase production of Patriot air defense system missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also suggested the drone was likely of Ukrainian origin and stated Russia is ready to participate in an investigation for objective analysis if Romania hands over the debris. Russia reiterated its call for a thorough, objective, and depoliticized investigation.
UN Warns of Risk of Conflict Escalation
Kayoko Goto, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division of the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, stated that the drone explosion in Galati, Romania, is clear evidence of the 'broader risk of conflict' that the UN has repeatedly warned about. She highlighted that this is not the first time Romanian airspace has been violated by drones since the full-scale conflict between Russia and Ukraine began.
The UN condemns all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, asserting they violate international humanitarian law and must cease immediately. Goto also warned of the risk of uncontrolled escalation, particularly regarding the safety of nuclear facilities, and urged all parties to exercise restraint and resume dialogue and negotiations to create conditions for peace in Ukraine.
