Hong Kong Housing Bureau to Add Emergency Reserve Units for Transitional Housing
Reserve Units Added to Transitional Housing for Emergency Accommodation
The Hong Kong Housing Bureau announced plans to add up to 180 reserve units within its community and national security transitional housing projects. These units, which will be available from July 1, are intended to provide three months of temporary accommodation for tenants forced to move out due to lease terminations, particularly those affected by changes in tenancy regulations. Mr. Victor Tai, Under Secretary for Housing, stated that these units are expected to meet the demand from those in urgent need of temporary housing.
Application Process and Timeline for Reserve Units
Addressing concerns from council members regarding the application process for these reserve units, Mr. Tai acknowledged the urgent nature of such applications. The Housing Bureau aims to complete the entire vetting process, including document collection and applicant interviews, within one month for general transitional housing applications. For the emergency reserve units, the goal is to expedite the review and allocation process to within one week.
Current Status of Transitional Housing Projects
Since 2020, the Hong Kong government has been promoting its transitional housing initiative, successfully providing over 21,000 units, surpassing the initial target of 20,000. More than 39,000 people have been accommodated to date, with approximately 7,000 having already moved into public housing. As of the end of April this year, the average occupancy rate across all transitional housing projects stood at about 80%.
