Industrial Accident at Longview Paper Plant
On May 26, a chemical tank imploded at a paper and packaging facility in Longview, Washington. The Longview Fire Department reported that the incident resulted in one fatality, ten injuries, and nine employees currently unaccounted for. Among the injured, eight were factory employees, and one was a firefighter. The injured were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Cause and Material Information
The implosion occurred after a tank containing white liquor, a chemical used in the paper-making process, ruptured. Officials initially stated the tank was roughly 60% full, but later discovered it held over 10 times the amount they had thought. CNN has reached out to the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. facility for comment regarding the incident. Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the accident site, with measures being taken to prevent further damage.
