Tokyo Architecture Festival: Canada Embassy and Cultural Heritage Buildings Open to Public
Tokyo Architecture Festival Held: Historical Buildings Special Public Opening
The 'Tokyo Architecture Festival' is taking place in Minato Ward, Tokyo, offering free public access to various historical buildings, including the Embassy of Canada and the Minato City Local History Museum, which are usually inaccessible. The event aims to rediscover the city's history and charm by exploring its architecture. This festival is particularly special as it opens the interiors of historical buildings that have overcome demolition threats.
Embassy of Canada: An Architectural Gem with 'Deep Ties to the Imperial Family'
The Embassy of Canada, located on Aoyama Dori, was designed by Japanese-Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama and has a deep connection to the Japanese Imperial Family. Inside the embassy, there are soapstone sculptures donated by the Imperial Couple, and it is also the place where Her Imperial Highness Hisako and Prince Takamado met while she was working as an interpreter in 1984, leading to their marriage. The embassy also features a garden replicating Canada's geography and a 'split rock' sculpture symbolizing friendly relations between Japan and Canada. While normally accessible to the public on weekdays with ID, special areas are being opened for this festival.
Minato City Local History Museum: Traces of the Former Public Health Institute Remain
The Minato City Local History Museum, located near Shirokanedai Station, was once a Public Health Institute designed by Professor Yoshikazu Uchida, who later became the president of the University of Tokyo. Built in 1938, it was a research institution focused on preventing infectious diseases through practices like handwashing and gargling, and Hideyo Noguchi was also associated with it. Currently, it is designated as a Minato City Tangible Cultural Property, preserving the splendid ceiling of its central hall and the original form of its lecture room. Recently, it gained attention as a filming location for the morning drama 'Tiger and Wings'. Inside the building, visitors can find remnants of the past, such as the original elevator site, marble-clad restrooms, and small doors embedded in the walls, adding to its charm.
