China's AheadForm Secures Millions for Emotionally Expressive Humanoid Robots
Aiming to Overcome the 'Uncanny Valley' with Major Investment
Chinese startup AheadForm (首形科技), specializing in robots with human-like appearance and emotional expression, secured hundreds of millions of yuan (billions of won) in its Series A1 funding round in April. The investment was led by T-CAPITAL (华控基金) and a major internet company, with participation from E-Town Capital (亦荘国投), SSEMF (上海半導体産投), China Merchants Venture (招商局創投), and Shunwei Capital (順為資本). This marks the sixth funding round for AheadForm since its establishment in June 2024. The capital raised will be allocated to enhancing its multi-modal dialogue system and emotional foundation models, improving facial expression components, and expanding into overseas markets.
Focused on Developing Human-Like Robots
AheadForm is dedicated to endowing robots with more human-like appearances and behavioral patterns. By integrating visual recognition and AI prediction technologies, the company aims for robots to anticipate human reactions and synchronize their facial expressions, thereby overcoming the 'uncanny valley' phenomenon often associated with humanoid robots. Central to this effort is the 'Facial Empathy Expression Prediction Model' developed by founder Hu Yuhang. This model captures subtle facial changes from high-frequency video data and uses quiet brushless micro-motors to mimic human facial muscle movements.
Currently, AheadForm offers four robot series. The 'Origin' series is a semi-open-source robot development platform for embodied AI. The 'Elf' series, featuring an artistic appearance and emotional dialogue capabilities, is envisioned for companionship, mental care, and commercial reception. The 'Mecha' series focuses on recreating sci-fi robots in collaboration with movie and TV IPs. Lastly, the 'Mimetic' series combines bio-level precise appearance replication with voice cloning technology for digital heritage preservation and AI companion applications.
