Modi Urges Domestic Weddings to Curb Foreign Exchange Outflow

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on citizens to hold their weddings within India rather than abroad, emphasizing the need to conserve foreign exchange and protect the rupee. During a recent gathering, Modi highlighted that destination weddings incur significant foreign currency expenditure and asserted that no place is as beautiful and sacred for a wedding as India. This appeal has gained urgency amidst growing economic pressures from the Iran War.

Deepening Energy Dependence and Rupee Weakness

India relies on imports from the Middle East for approximately 90% of its oil and gas demand. Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy transit point, have heightened concerns about supply disruptions and rising import costs. This situation is placing further pressure on the already weak rupee. To maintain foreign exchange reserves, Modi has urged the public to conserve fuel, utilize remote work, choose domestic travel, and defer gold purchases for one year. Following the Iran War, the rupee has depreciated by over 5%, making it the weakest major currency in Asia.
