Uganda Boosts Ebola Measures at DRC Border Amid Outbreak Concerns
Mpondwe Border Enhances Health Screening
Uganda is strengthening its health measures at the Mpondwe border crossing with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to prevent the spread of Ebola. The Mpondwe border, stretching approximately 800km, is partially porous, making comprehensive monitoring challenging. In response, the Ugandan government has deployed health officials to conduct temperature screenings and hand sanitization for all individuals crossing the border. As of May 21, 2026, the two reported Ebola cases in Uganda were both DRC nationals; one person died, and the other has tested negative and is undergoing treatment.
Economic Implications and Community Concerns
The Mpondwe border is a highly active area, with over 100 trucks passing through daily and significant cross-border movement. To contain the outbreak, Uganda has implemented new measures, including the suspension of flights between Uganda and the DRC and the closure of weekly markets. However, these actions are severely impacting the livelihoods of border communities. One resident expressed frustration, stating, 'Whether they close it or not, guys, look, we are dying. We earn our living right here.' Another voiced concern about supporting their children, emphasizing, 'We are looking for small amounts of money to pay for school and food.'
