More than 50 people have been killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Shanxi province, central China. The incident occurred in Qinyuan county, approximately 520km (320 miles) southwest of Beijing, on Friday. The blast happened shortly after the mine issued a carbon monoxide alert late on Friday. At the time of the explosion, 247 workers were underground.
President Xi Jinping Urges Rescue Efforts
Following the tragic incident, President Xi Jinping has called for rescuers to "make every effort" in their operations. It remains unclear whether any additional workers are still trapped.
