On May 23, 2026, a gas explosion at a coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China, resulted in the deaths of at least 90 people, state media reported. This incident marks the country's worst mining disaster in 17 years. At the time of the blast, 247 workers were underground, and 755 emergency and medical personnel were dispatched to the site for rescue operations.
Ongoing Rescue and Investigation Efforts
A total of 123 people were sent to hospitals for treatment, with four in critical or severe condition. As of Saturday afternoon, 33 of those treated had returned home. President Xi Jinping urged 'all-out efforts' to treat the injured and called for thorough investigations into the incident. Friday's explosion was the worst mining disaster in China since 2009, when 108 people were killed in a mine blast in Heilongjiang province.
