EU Clinches New Trade Deal with Mexico to Bolster Latin American Foothold
EU-Mexico Trade Agreement Officially Signed
The European Union (EU) officially signed a revamped trade deal with Mexico in Mexico City on May 22, 2026. The agreement, which updates a two-decade-old pact, was formalized in the presence of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa. This trade agreement is part of a broader strategy for the EU to expand its influence in Latin America and for both parties to reduce their economic dependence on the United States and China.
Economic Impact and Expectations
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the goal of the agreement is to create even more jobs and value on both sides. She highlighted that with swift ratification, tariffs on virtually all Mexican agri-food exports to Europe will disappear. The EU will gain access to new markets such as pharmaceuticals, agri-food, and machinery. Currently, Mexico is the EU's second-largest trading partner in Latin America, and European companies already support more than 5 million jobs in Mexico. The deal is expected to further deepen bilateral trade relations and drive additional economic growth.
