China Warns Mexico of Retaliatory Measures Over Import Duties
China's Ministry of Commerce has warned Mexico of potential retaliatory measures after concluding an investigation into Mexico's import duties of up to 50% on Asian goods.
China's Warning on Mexico's Tariffs
China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has warned Mexico it could impose retaliatory measures following a formal investigation into tariffs Mexico placed on over 1,400 categories of Asian goods. These tariffs, ranging from 5% to 50% on 1,463 product categories, have been in force since January 1. MOFCOM stated that these duties restrict the entry of Chinese goods into Mexico.
Complications for Trade Negotiations
This dispute threatens to complicate Mexico City’s parallel negotiations to renew its trade agreement with the United States. The trade conflict arises from Mexico's increased import restrictions on Asian products, potentially impacting Mexico's international trade relations.
