Guadeloupe Grapples with Surging Gun Violence, Young Victims Disproportionately Affected
Guadeloupe Confronts Escalating Gun Violence and Enhanced Enforcement
Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory in the Caribbean, is experiencing a troubling rise in gun violence. With a population of just 400,000, approximately 40,000 firearms are in circulation, equating to one gun per 10 residents. In response, Guadeloupe's anti-crime brigade has intensified night patrols to combat the illegal gun trade. During a recent patrol in Le Gosier, four young men aged 17 to 20 were arrested, and a revolver loaded with five bullets was discovered hidden under their vehicle. Despite their claims that the weapon was not theirs, authorities note this denial is a common occurrence.
Illicit Arms Trafficking Routes and Maritime Interdiction Challenges
Firearms are confiscated every three days in Guadeloupe, ranging from small pistols, sold for 500 euros on the black market, to automatic and semi-automatic rifles. In 2025, gun-related deaths surged to 32, a 45% increase from the previous year, with 12 victims already recorded this year. A quarter of these homicides are linked to drug trafficking. The weapons typically originate from the United States or Brazil, transit through Dominica, and then are smuggled by sea to Marie-Galante before reaching Guadeloupe. The Gendarmerie Water Patrol conducts maritime inspections to intercept these illicit shipments. However, the sheer volume of vessels makes daily comprehensive searches challenging, as officers state, "We don't know what's inside, so our primary role is to check that nothing is taken or hidden underneath."
Victims' Families Call for Action Amidst Unrelenting Violence
In Les Abymes, the family of Jessy Belveder is mourning his tragic death on October 7 last year, when he was shot in the head while driving his car. Jessy, 23, was reportedly killed by an acquaintance due to a romantic rivalry. His mother, Claudine Belveder, and sisters, Lynsey Belveder and Cindy Belveder, express profound grief, stating their world has been "turned upside down." They highlight that gun violence is no longer limited to settling scores but now occurs for "everything and anything," raising concerns about their future and raising children in Guadeloupe. In the past two years, 66 families have been affected by gun violence. Authorities have pledged increased funding for the police and Gendarmerie to combat this persistent issue.
