AMA Warns Patients: Do Not Rely on AI for Diagnostic Decisions
AMA Issues Warning on AI Reliance for Diagnosis and Treatment
The American Medical Association (AMA) has warned patients that artificial intelligence (AI) should never be relied upon for diagnosis and treatment decisions. In a new practice management tool addressing the growing use of chatbots, the AMA noted that patients are increasingly seeking clinical guidance from augmented intelligence. The association stressed that patients should use AI to 'complement'—not replace—the advice of their doctors, highlighting that medical expertise remains indispensable.
States Implement Regulations for AI in Healthcare
The AMA is calling on federal lawmakers to establish stronger safeguards to ensure AI tools do not supplant physicians. Meanwhile, individual states are taking their own actions. Delaware recently passed House Bill 191, prohibiting AI agents from presenting themselves as providers and explicitly barring them from using protected titles and abbreviations such as doctor or physician. The American College of Radiology (ACR) reported this measure supports clear title protection as AI tools spread in healthcare and strengthens the case for similar safeguards in other states. Other states, including Oregon, Washington, and California, have also enacted similar legislative steps.
