Peru Confirms Runoff Candidates for Presidential Election: Fujimori vs. Sanchez
Peru Confirms Presidential Runoff Candidates
Peru has officially confirmed the candidates for its upcoming presidential runoff vote in June, following a month-long delay in reviewing contested ballots from the first round. The race will see right-wing Popular Force candidate Keiko Fujimori face off against leftist Together for Peru candidate Roberto Sanchez. In the first round, Fujimori secured 13.4% of the votes, while Sanchez garnered 19.1%, together accounting for only 29% of the electorate.
Corruption Probes and Lack of Broad Support
Both candidates are currently under investigation for corruption, setting the stage for an election marked by public mistrust. Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the imprisoned former president Alberto Fujimori, is viewed by many as an architect of Peru's decade-long political crisis, with 48% of Peruvians stating they would never vote for her. Meanwhile, Roberto Sanchez is considered the political heir to the jailed ex-leader Pedro Castillo and is also under investigation by prosecutors for campaign contributions in the 2021 election. Critics argue that these legal actions are a ploy to prevent him from being elected.
Deep Ideological Divide and National Polarization
This election represents a stark left-right ideological divide in Peru. Sanchez has promised major reforms, rallying against a 'mafia' that he claims has seized the nation's wealth and undermined democracy. Fujimori, on the other hand, campaigns on her father's tough economic policies and emphasizes strong leadership and economic stability. With both candidates facing significant disapproval from a large portion of the electorate, the race to win over undecided voters will be a tough one.
