Venezuela Defies Trump's '51st US State' Proposal
Trump's '51st State' Remark and Venezuela's Response
US President Donald Trump recently expressed interest in turning Venezuela into the '51st US state' via a Truth Social post, which included a map showing Venezuela filled with the US flag. This statement was met with strong condemnation from Venezuela, with acting president Delcy Rodríguez stating that such a plan is 'not on the cards' and would 'never be on the cards'. Rodríguez emphasized that Venezuelans love their independence process and history, and will continue to defend their sovereignty.
Citizen Protests in Defense of Sovereignty
In response to Trump's remarks, Venezuelan citizens organized large protests in the capital, Caracas. Demonstrators, holding signs demanding 'freedom' and the release of 'political prisoners,' blocked a main highway, asserting their national sovereignty. A student leader, Miguel Suarez, stated that Trump and the US have their own agenda regarding the '51st state,' which Venezuela, as a sovereign nation, rejects. Relatives of prisoners also voiced criticism against the Venezuelan government, recounting instances of torture and abuse suffered by their loved ones.
