Trump Suggests Considering Venezuela as 51st U.S. State
President Trump Hints at Venezuelan Annexation
U.S. President Donald Trump recently posted an image on his social media depicting Venezuela as the '51st State' of the United States. Following this, in an interview with Fox News, he stated that he is "seriously considering a move to make Venezuela the 51st state," hinting at the possibility of annexation. This statement comes months after the U.S. captured then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Venezuelan Citizens and Government Oppose the Idea
President Trump's remarks met strong opposition from Venezuelan citizens. Ismael Camargo, a retiree from Caracas, expressed that he "wouldn't want to belong to a foreign state" as Venezuela is a free country. Gabriela Guzman, a nurse, also emphasized the right to self-determination, stating, "We have the freedom to decide whether we want to belong to another place, another person, or another culture." Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela's acting President, firmly stated that her country has no plans to become a U.S. state. She added, "We love our process of independence. We will continue to defend our integrity, our sovereignty, our independence, and our history."
