Rare 'Blue Moon' and 'Micromoon' Phenomenon Expected in May 2026
Special Lunar Event in May 2026
A Blue Moon is anticipated to occur toward the end of May 2026. This term traditionally refers to either the third full moon in a season with four full moons or the second full moon in a single calendar month. Such a rare occurrence has led to the common phrase 'once in a blue moon.'
Coincidence with a Micromoon
This particular Blue Moon will also coincide with a micromoon, meaning the Moon will be near its apogee, or farthest point from Earth in its orbit. Consequently, the full moon on May 1st, often called the Flower Moon, is expected to appear relatively smaller. It is important to note that a Blue Moon does not actually appear blue in color; the term signifies its rare occurrence.
