Mount Dukono Erupts with Casualties
Mount Dukono on Indonesia's eastern Halmahera island erupted on Friday, January 12th, sending a massive ash cloud into the sky. This area had been declared off-limits to visitors last month due to observed increases in volcanic activity. The eruption tragically resulted in the deaths of three hikers and left ten missing, with five others sustaining injuries. Seven individuals were safely brought down from the area.
Indonesian Disaster Management Response
According to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, the deceased and missing individuals had entered an area declared off-limits due to volcanic activity. Authorities had previously heightened vigilance and restricted access to the region. Rescue teams are currently conducting search and rescue operations for the missing, while implementing measures to prevent further casualties.
