Apprenticeship System's Achievements and Individual Growth
The Hong Kong Apprenticeship Ordinance, implemented in 1976, has been in effect for 50 years, serving as a crucial pathway for young people to acquire professional skills and build careers. Lo Tsz-ho, who initially studied electrical engineering at university but found it did not align with his interests, dropped out and joined the VTC Apprenticeship Training Scheme. He is now an Assistant Engineer at a construction management company, building a successful career based on practical experience and knowledge gained on-site. He states that the apprenticeship allowed him to learn extensively, understand construction progress, and question technicians' methods, fostering his personal growth.
Companies Nurturing Talent Through Apprenticeship
Dr. Barry Lee, former President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and current CEO of an engineering firm, also began his career in the 1980s through the Hong Kong Electric Company's technician apprenticeship program. During a time when university admission was challenging, the apprenticeship offered him the opportunity to pursue higher education and acquire technical skills. Since establishing his company, Dr. Lee has hired one to two apprentices annually, and currently, two departmental heads in his company are graduates of apprenticeship training schemes. He emphasizes that the apprenticeship system helps many young people in Hong Kong find their professional calling through various avenues, even if direct university entry isn't their path.
Government Efforts to Strengthen Apprenticeship Support
To enhance the attractiveness of apprenticeship training, the Hong Kong government has introduced various support programs. These include scholarships for higher diplomas from the Vocational Training Council (VTC), Outstanding Apprentice Awards, and continuing education scholarships for graduate apprentices. These initiatives aim to encourage more young people to participate in vocational training and find suitable career paths, ensuring a continuous supply of skilled professionals for society. The apprenticeship system contributes not only to individual development but also to the overall advancement of Hong Kong's industries.
