Doctor on Hantavirus-Hit Cruise Ship Describes Symptoms
Hantavirus Outbreak and Medical Response Aboard Cruise Ship
Dr. Stephen Kornfeld recounted that he became aware of a passenger falling ill on the cruise ship in late April. He offered to assist the ship's doctor, only to later learn that the doctor was also sick. Within 12 to 24 hours, it became clear that a number of people were sick and their conditions were worsening. The ship's doctor was eventually evacuated, leading Dr. Kornfeld to effectively step into the role of the acting ship doctor.
Patient Symptoms and Rapid Disease Progression
Dr. Kornfeld described three patients. One patient exhibited non-specific symptoms such as confusion and weakness, and tragically passed away relatively quickly. The other two, including the evacuated doctor, were younger and presented with typical viral symptoms like fever, fatigue, flushing, gastrointestinal issues, and shortness of breath. He noted that initially, none of them appeared critically ill. However, Dr. Kornfeld emphasized the serious concern with Hantavirus: patients can rapidly progress from "seriously ill to critically ill, very, very quickly." This rapid deterioration makes Hantavirus infections particularly dangerous.
