Bangladesh Battles Deadliest Measles Outbreak in Decades
Measles Outbreak Escalates in Bangladesh, Claiming Over 300 Child Lives
Bangladesh is facing its deadliest measles outbreak in decades, with reports indicating that over 300 children have died since mid-March. More than 50,000 confirmed and suspected cases have been reported nationwide, raising serious concerns about a deepening public health emergency. Hospitals and medical facilities are overwhelmed, with temporary wards being set up to accommodate the influx of critically ill children. This highly contagious virus is spreading rapidly, further straining the already stretched healthcare system.
Healthcare Challenges and Urgent Vaccination Campaigns
Health experts attribute the severity of the outbreak partly to vaccination gaps that worsened during the political unrest of 2024, leaving millions of children vulnerable. Measles, which spreads through coughs and sneezes, can be lethal for young children, causing severe breathing problems, brain swelling, and in some cases, death. According to government figures, most infections are among children between 6 months and 5 years old.
Authorities, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, are rushing to vaccinate children across the country. Nearly 17 million children have received measles-rubella shots since the emergency campaign began in April. However, the situation remains critical, with May 4th alone recording 17 child deaths, marking the deadliest day of the outbreak so far.
