McDonald's Wins Legal Battle to Open on Melbourne's 'Coolest Street'
McDonald's Approved to Open in Melbourne's Northcote
Fast-food giant McDonald's is set to open a 24/7 takeaway outlet on High Street in Northcote, Melbourne, a street once heralded as the "world's coolest." The company successfully challenged the local council's attempt to block the new restaurant. Victoria's civil and administrative tribunal (Vcat) upheld McDonald's application for a review of Darebin city council's decision to reject its initial proposal to convert 323 High Street into one of its stores.
Tribunal Rejects 'Vibe' as Basis for Denial
The tribunal found that the fast-food chain could not be denied on the basis that it did not suit the 'vibe' of the location. This ruling overturns the Darebin city council's decision, allowing McDonald's to proceed with its plans in the Northcote area. The outcome marks another victory for McDonald's in its strategy to expand new outlets despite local community opposition in various locations.
