Three Australian Women Arrested on Terrorism and Slavery Charges After Returning from Syria
Three Women Arrested and Charged Upon Return from Syria
Australian police have arrested three Australian women returning from Syria at Melbourne and Sydney airports, charging them with terrorism and slavery offences. The women arrived on flights from Doha and, according to police, were linked to the Islamic State group and had been under investigation for years. Their arrests followed their arrival back in the country with nine children.
Australian Government's Stance and Future Repatriation Plans
Anthony Albanese, the Australian prime minister, stated that he has absolutely zero sympathy for the women, but expressed sympathy for the children, who he described as victims of their parents' decisions. He emphasized the need for appropriate support for the children who have been exposed to various horrors in the camps. Another 21 Australian women and children are still being held in Syrian detention camps, with supporters calling for their repatriation in the coming weeks.
