Trump Dismisses Pakistan's Mediation Efforts Amid Iran Peace Talks Stalemate
US-Iran Peace Efforts Face Setback
US President Donald Trump has announced a new setback to the possibility of peace between the United States and Iran, canceling a trip to Islamabad by his two envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Trump stated, "We have all the cards. They have no military left, practically. They have no leaders left. We don't know who the leaders are." He added there was no reason to wait two days for people to travel for 16-17 hours, suggesting that Iran could call him if they wished to negotiate seriously.
Pakistan's Mediation and Iran's Stance
Prior to Trump's statement, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Islamabad without clear signs of a breakthrough in talks with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Araghchi posted online that he "Shared Iran's position concerning workable framework to permanently end the war on Iran. Have yet to see if the U.S. is truly serious about diplomacy." Among the Pakistani officials involved in discussions was Asim Munir, the Pakistani military chief, who is seen as a key figure in the mediation effort.
Diplomatic Deadlock Continues
For the moment, the situation appears to be a dialogue of the deaf, with both sides maintaining their positions. Pakistan's Prime Minister stated he has spoken with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian on the evolving regional security situation. However, no definitive breakthrough has been achieved to de-escalate tensions between the U.S. and Iran, leaving the diplomatic efforts in a stalemate.
