Hong Kong's Enhanced Tobacco Control and Tourist Outreach for New Smoking Products
Enhanced Regulations on New Tobacco Products
Hong Kong's Director of Health has issued a stern warning regarding violations related to new tobacco products, stating that offenders could face fines and imprisonment. Individuals found in possession of fewer than five e-cigarettes, less than 5ml of e-liquid, or fewer than 100 heated tobacco sticks or chocolate cigarettes will be subject to a maximum fine of HKD 3,000. However, possessing larger quantities could lead to a fine of up to HKD 50,000 and up to six months in prison. Authorities emphasize that these measures aim to effectively curb the distribution of new tobacco products.
Promoting Compliance Among Tourists and Cross-Sector Collaboration
The Director of Health strongly advises tourists against carrying new tobacco products and stated that extensive promotional activities have been launched at the airport and all land entry points. Furthermore, collaborations with travel agencies and tourism management bodies are in place to disseminate relevant information to visitors in advance. The response from tourists to these measures has been largely positive, and it is not expected to have a significant negative impact on tourism. Authorities believe that the increase in hotel bookings and the overall vibrancy of tourism in Hong Kong indicate that visitors are well aware of and adhering to these regulations.
