Gaza's Deir al-Balah Holds First Municipal Elections in 20 Years
Municipal Elections Held in Gaza After Two Decades
For the first time in 20 years, municipal elections were held in Deir al-Balah, located in central Gaza, as well as in the occupied West Bank, following Israel's recent war. According to the Ramallah-based Central Elections Commission, approximately 1.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank and 70,000 residents in the Deir al-Balah area registered to vote. One candidate emphasized that the election serves as a crucial link to unite the two branches of the country and expressed hope for Palestine to become a free Arab nation with Jerusalem as its capital.
Democratic Celebration Amidst Difficult Circumstances
Despite the challenging circumstances, the election is seen as a "democratic celebration." Citizens view this election as an opportunity to change the current reality in Gaza and pursue a better future. Voters aim to send a message to the world that Gaza has life and existence, and its people desire to live, not for death or destruction. There is also hope that the newly elected officials will prioritize national development, improve the quality of life for citizens, and foster overall progress for the country.
