Iran War Triggers Historical Shift in War Concept, 2025-2026 as Turning Point
Historical Turning Point in the Concept of War
2025 and 2026 may be remembered as pivotal years in the history of human warfare. Two major events during this period fundamentally changed the existing concept of war. The first was the so-called 'Spiderweb Operation' in June 2025, where Ukraine launched drones from within Russian territory to attack a Russian Air Force base. The second was the late February 2026 attack by the United States and Israel on Iran, resulting in the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. These incidents demonstrated that with the technological advancements in drones and missiles, warfare is no longer confined to traditional 'battlefields.'
Blurring Lines Between Inter-State War and Terrorist Attacks
In the past, attempts at terrorist attacks or assassinations of key figures within enemy territory during inter-state wars were auxiliary actions intended to gain an advantage in battlefield engagements. However, with the evolution of drone and missile technology, the boundary between inter-state war and terrorist attacks is becoming increasingly blurred. This necessitates a redefinition of the agents and methods of warfare, adding complexity and unpredictability to the international security environment. Such changes carry the risk of plunging the world into chaotic disorder.
