Tepco's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Unit 6 Restarts Commercial Operation, Supplying Power to Greater Tokyo
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 6 Resumes Commercial Operation
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) announced that Unit 6 of its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Niigata Prefecture, which was restarted in January, began commercial operation on the afternoon of April 16. This means that electricity generated by the plant will be supplied to the Tokyo metropolitan area and other regions. This marks approximately 14 years since Unit 6 ceased operation following the accident at Tepco's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
Power Supply and Relaunch Background
The resumption of commercial operation for Unit 6 is expected to provide electricity to key regions, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, contributing to the stabilization of Japan's energy supply. Tepco has been progressively restarting its nuclear power plants that were shut down after the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident, and the commercial operation of Unit 6 is part of this ongoing process.
