Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 6 Halts Generation Due to Electrical Leakage Alarm
Electrical Leakage Alarm and Power Halt
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 6, which resumed operations in January after approximately 14 years, triggered an electrical leakage alarm on March 12. The alarm indicated that a slight amount of electricity was leaking from the generator to the ground. In response, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) halted power generation and transmission for Unit 6 around 0:30 PM on the 14th to conduct a thorough investigation.
Safety Measures and Future Plans
According to TEPCO, there are no abnormalities in the reactor itself. The plant is currently operating at approximately 20% output while investigations are underway. Hiroshi Kikukawa, Unit Manager of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, stated, 'Considering human safety, we decided it was necessary to stop the generator and conduct an investigation with no electricity flowing.' He added, 'Our primary mission is to bring the plant to a safe state.' The commencement of commercial operation, originally scheduled for the 18th, is now expected to be delayed due to this incident.
Concerns Over Operational Delays
This halt in power generation and transmission due to an electrical leakage alarm is likely to affect the start of commercial operation for Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 6. TEPCO is prioritizing safety and conducting detailed investigations, with the timing for the resumption of operations to be determined based on the investigation results. This incident once again raises safety concerns regarding the restart of nuclear power plants in Japan.
