Quang Ngai Province Pilots AI Education at Primary School Level
Quang Ngai Province Launches Primary AI Education Pilot Program
On April 16, the Quang Ngai Department of Education and Training in Vietnam implemented a pilot program for "artificial intelligence (AI) education at the primary school level" in the Kon Tum district. This initiative focuses on building a solid foundation for future students navigating the digital era. The program, which ran from April 14 to 18, involved administrators and teachers from 44 selected pilot primary schools.
Huynh Thi Thu Van, Director of the Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, emphasized that as AI increasingly dominates all aspects of life, education in technological skills is crucial for Vietnam to integrate into the international community and stand alongside major global players. She stated that introducing AI in schools is not only an inevitable trend but also an urgent task to foster a generation of technologically skilled and humane digital citizens.
Human-Centered AI Education Philosophy and Flexible Implementation
The AI education program is based on a "human-centered" philosophy and promotes "learning through exploration and play." Rather than forcing complex programming or algorithms on primary students, it aims to create a vibrant and engaging experiential learning environment where students first understand that AI is a tool created by humans for humans. Ethical education regarding AI is also a top priority, teaching children from an early age about personal information protection, copyright respect, safe and responsible technology use, and the role of human control over AI.
A notable aspect of the program is its flexible implementation. It seamlessly integrates AI concepts into existing curricula such as computer science, Vietnamese, mathematics, ethics, and natural and social sciences. Furthermore, STEM-related experiential activities and club activities encourage students to engage in mini-projects related to AI that address real community problems. Director Thu Van affirmed the commitment to support teachers at every stage of education reform, ensuring they can leverage AI as a powerful supportive tool.
