Fire Erupts at Geelong Refinery and Containment Efforts
A massive fire broke out late on April 15, 2026, at Viva Energy's refinery in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The blaze affected the biogas plant and infrastructure areas, with flames reaching up to 60 meters (200 feet) high. Firefighters worked through the night to bring the blaze under control. Mick McGuinness, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Fire Rescue Victoria, stated that while the fire is not yet fully controlled, it has been contained to the biogas plant and an area of approximately 30 meters by 30 meters. He added that large quantities of water were used to cool and contain the fire.
Environmental Monitoring and Production Plans
Authorities have deployed a specialist hazardous materials crew from Fire Rescue Victoria to monitor for any contaminated products entering waterways and the bay, as well as to ensure no contaminants are in the smoke. Scott Wyatt, CEO of Viva Energy, confirmed that most other units at the refinery are still operating at minimum rates to maintain safety, with production continuing. Wyatt emphasized that production will only be increased once it is deemed safe to do so. He also mentioned that any production shortfalls would be covered by their import program, which is already booked out for the next couple of months.
