Geelong Refinery Fire: No Contaminants Detected
Current Status and Response to Geelong Refinery Fire
The fire at the Viva oil refinery in Geelong, Australia, is still burning, with Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) assistant chief fire officer Mick McGuinness stating that no harmful contaminants have been detected. Around 7 AM, approximately 50 firefighting vehicles were engaged in combating the blaze in the Mogas (motor gasoline) plant section of the refinery. The fire is primarily fueled by liquid petrol, along with some gas and vapors. Initial concerns about smoke dispersion led to community alerts, but specialist hazardous materials teams have since confirmed no contaminants were detected through atmospheric monitoring and fire water runoff sampling.
Fragile Energy Security and Future Outlook
McGuinness anticipates the fire could persist for another three to four hours or longer. However, a reduction in the fire's intensity indicates depressurization of systems and pipework, leading to less fuel being available. This will allow crews to cool the area more rapidly and work on isolating pipework and valve systems. The incident highlights Australia's very fragile energy security platform, with only two refineries remaining, and underscores the need for increased national investment in such capabilities.
