Fire Breaks Out at Geelong Refinery
A fire broke out at the Geelong oil refinery in Victoria, Australia, at 11 PM last night. Chris Bowen, the Australian Energy Minister, stated that while the fire is still burning, the refinery is continuing to produce diesel and jet fuel at reduced levels as a safety precaution. The fire originated in the Mogas Plant, a section of the refinery that aids in the production of high-octane fuels. It appears a significant leak of liquid hydrocarbons and gases fueled the fire, which is not yet fully under control but has been contained to the Mogas Plant.
Minister's Statement and Future Outlook
Energy Minister Chris Bowen reported that the fire continued to burn overnight and is still not under control. He confirmed that he has been communicating with the chief executive through the night, who has been on-site. The Minister noted that the main impact at this point appears to be on petrol production. He added that while it is not a positive development and will have an impact, he will work closely with Viva to assess the full implications. There is currently no reason to stop the production of diesel and jet fuel.
