DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin Rejects Steyer's Criticism of ICE
ICE's Role and Immigration Policy Debate
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin countered remarks by California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer, who called ICE a 'criminal organization'. Mullin asserted that ICE is an agency that enforces laws passed by Congress. He stated that Steyer misunderstands ICE's role and shows a reluctance to view criminals as such. Mullin added that if Democratic representatives in California wished to change ICE's authority, they could do so.
Georgia Murder Case and Illegal Immigration Costs
Mullin also addressed a murder case in Georgia, revealing that an individual naturalized by the Biden administration, a UK national, went on a killing spree. This suspect reportedly had a prior criminal history including sexual battery and assault with a deadly weapon. Mullin highlighted that the suspect had a pattern of escalating criminal activity every April, and that the Biden administration was aware of this record but chose to naturalize him rather than deport him. He noted that the average cost to deport an undocumented individual is $18,225 and mentioned that the Trump administration deported 700,000 individuals, while 2 million self-deported, influenced by stricter policies. Mullin criticized the abuse of asylum claims, stating it strains the US legal system.
Abuse of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Program
Secretary Mullin criticized the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, arguing it has become a permanent status rather than a temporary one. He noted that some Haitian immigrants have been in the US under TPS for over 30 years. Mullin stated that President Trump had sought to end such TPS categories, but faced congressional opposition. He believes TPS should be temporary and that its continuous extension, often for 'humanitarian' reasons, encourages illegal immigration and undermines border security. Mullin affirmed that he and President Trump are committed to ending the abuse of the TPS program.
