Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has announced his resignation from the House of Representatives and the suspension of his campaign for California governor, following a series of sexual misconduct allegations. This decision came just two days after he suspended his gubernatorial campaign. On Tuesday, a fifth woman came forward, accusing Swalwell of sexual misconduct. Lana Drews, at a press conference, described an alleged 2018 encounter where she believes Swalwell drugged her drink, raped her, and choked her, causing her to lose consciousness. Her attorney stated that her firm would be filing a police report with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
Swalwell's Statement on Resignation
In a statement posted on X on Monday, Swalwell apologized to his family, staff, and constituents for “mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.” He vowed to “fight the serious, false allegation made against me,” but also stated, “I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.” Swalwell, who is married and has three children, also noted efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against him and other members. He indicated that expelling anyone in Congress without due process is wrong, and to avoid distracting his constituents from his duties, he plans to resign his seat in Congress. A representative for Swalwell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
