Lafarge Found Guilty of Financing Terrorism
Lafarge Convicted for Terror Financing
Lafarge was accused of paying a total of 6.5 million dollars in protection money to terrorist groups, including Daesh, to keep its plant in northern Syria operational during the Syrian civil war. A TRT World investigation five years ago, based on thousands of leaked documents, revealed that Bruno Peschier, former plant director of Lafarge, was aware of payments made to terrorist groups. After a 10-year official investigation and a six-week trial, Lafarge and eight of its former employees were found guilty of financing terrorism and breaking sanctions. The company was fined 6.7 million dollars.
Former Executives Receive Prison Sentences
Former plant director Bruno Peschier and former deputy CEO Christian Herrault were each given five-year sentences. Former CEO Bruno Lafont received a six-year sentence. Lawyers for Bruno Lafont, Jacqueline Laffont, and Christian Herrault, Solange Doumic, stated they would appeal the decision. This marks the first time a multinational company has been found guilty of financing terrorism, with Lafarge having previously been fined 778 million dollars four years ago.
