Gaza's Transportation System Nears Collapse Due to Critical Vehicle Parts Shortage
Gaza's Struggle with Vehicle Mobility
Across the Gaza Strip, the persistent Israeli blockade has severely hampered the availability of vehicle spare parts, pushing the transportation system to the brink of collapse. The video shows numerous broken-down cars lining roadsides and piled up in scrap yards, many rendered unusable due to the lack of repairable components. This situation makes it exceedingly difficult for residents to travel from one place to another, profoundly impacting daily life in Gaza.
Mechanics' Efforts and Soaring Costs
Mechanics in Gaza are making strenuous efforts to address the severe shortage of parts. They are resorting to reshaping old components, combining parts from different vehicles, and even fabricating new ones from scrap materials. Mechanic Alaa Mahmoud showcased an old water pump, explaining that despite its inefficiency, it must be sold to customers because no new parts are available in the market. This part, once costing $23, now sells for $500 but only lasts two to three weeks. Shop owner Mahmoud Helles highlighted their efforts to provide customers with necessary parts by salvaging from bombed or damaged cars, or by manufacturing aluminum components by hand. However, these improvised repairs, which used to take hours, now take days, and the increased prices make even basic maintenance unaffordable for many.
Impact on Residents' Daily Lives
The challenges in vehicle maintenance directly affect the daily lives of Gaza residents. Taxi drivers, delivery workers, and families struggle to afford repairs, making it difficult to reach workplaces, hospitals, and essential services. This leads to lost income and increased reliance on limited aid entering the strip. Mechanics state they will continue to adapt and find ways to keep cars running for as long as possible. However, there are limits to what they can achieve without proper parts. This situation underscores how the Israeli blockade is severely bringing everyday life in Gaza to a standstill.
