Japanese National Released on Bail in Iran
A Japanese national, detained in Iran amid antigovernment protests, has been released on bail. Japan's top government spokesperson, Minoru Kihara, confirmed that the Embassy of Japan in Iran verified a Japanese national, detained on January 20, was released on April 6 local time. This individual is believed to be Shinnosuke Kawashima, the Tehran bureau chief for Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
Good Health, But Travel Ban and Trial Expected
Kihara stated that the released individual appeared to have no health issues, but did not provide further details on their identity or charges. Japan’s Kyodo News reported that the individual is not permitted to leave Iran and has been charged with security-related offenses, with a trial expected. At the time of the arrest, NHK had emphasized staff safety as a top priority.
