Hong Kong Taxi Driver Arrested for Demanding 'Highway Toll' from Undercover Officers
Operation to Crack Down on Taxi Violations on Lantau Island
Hong Kong police conducted an operation on Monday to crack down on taxi violations on Lantau Island. During the operation, officers posed as passengers, taking a taxi from Hong Kong Disneyland Resort to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint. This measure aimed to identify illegal practices by taxi drivers, such as unfair fare collection.
Driver Arrested for Demanding 'Highway Toll'
According to the police, upon arrival at the destination, the taxi driver demanded approximately HK$85 (about US$11) as a 'highway toll.' The police then arrested the 31-year-old taxi driver on the spot. This arrest serves as a warning against the practice of charging passengers unjustified additional fees.
