Australian EV Sales Soar Amid Fuel Price Hikes and Cost Savings
EV Sales Up 40% Year-on-Year
According to figures from the Electric Vehicle Council, sales of leading EV brands like Tesla and Polestar are up 40% compared to last year. Overall EV sales surged by 42% last month, while traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) car sales fell by 11%, showing a stark contrast. This trend is attributed to soaring fuel prices and increased consumer interest in the cost-saving benefits of electric vehicles.
Economic Advantages and Accessibility Challenges
New EV owners highlight the significant reduction in running costs, especially when utilizing home solar charging. This long-term fuel saving is a major draw. However, economist Leslie Martin notes that households able to afford EVs typically need home charging or at least off-street parking, limiting access for apartment dwellers or renters. The used EV market, while growing, is expected to take another 2 to 3 years to see a substantial influx of these vehicles.
