Trump's Threats to Iran as Strait of Hormuz Reopening Deadline Nears
U.S. President's Threats to Iran and Iran's Retaliation
U.S. President Donald Trump issued threats to Iran as the deadline for reopening the Strait of Hormuz approaches. Trump threatened 'obliteration' to civilian targets within Iran, which some observers contend would be a war crime. Simultaneously, he claimed talks with Iran were progressing well and a deal could be secured. In response, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran's Parliament, posted on social media, "Your reckless moves are dragging the United States into a living HELL for every single family, and our whole region is going to burn because you insist on following Netanyahu's commands."
Iran's Warning of Reciprocal Attacks and Regional Escalation
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Iran would reciprocate attacks on its infrastructure, emphasizing that Iranians are prepared to defend their sovereignty 'with all our might'. He described Trump's latest threats as 'incitement for war crimes' and asserted that the Strait of Hormuz would not return to its pre-war status. Iran plans to impose new fees on ships passing through the strait to compensate for losses incurred since the war began. Iranian media reported U.S.-Israeli attacks targeting the international airport in the southwestern city of Ahvaz and strikes near the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The Israeli army claimed to have hit more than 200 targets in Iran and Lebanon over the weekend.
Spreading Attacks on Gulf Region Facilities
In Kuwait, two major power and desalination plants, including the Al Zour plant, were targeted by drone attacks, alongside an attack on the Ministry of Finance complex in central Kuwait City. In Bahrain, Iran targeted an oil facility in Sitra, sparking multiple fires. Iranian authorities reported 2,076 people killed and 26,500 injured in U.S.-Israeli offensive since February 28. Concerns are particularly high regarding the Bushehr power plant, Iran's only operational nuclear facility, as any strike there could lead to a catastrophe affecting not only Iran but also the entire Gulf region due to its radioactive material content.
