Amidst the ongoing US-Israeli war in Iran, the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran has reportedly been struck again. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran stated that a projectile hit and exploded near the facility's fence, killing one security personnel and damaging a supporting building. This marks the fourth attack on the plant since the war began.
IAEA Urges Restraint Amidst Safety Concerns
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed by Iran about this fourth attack. The IAEA noted that no increase in radiation levels has been reported near the facility yet. However, the agency warned that auxiliary site buildings may contain vital safety equipment and reiterated its call for maximum military restraint to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.
Multiple Strikes and Russian Evacuations
The Bushehr nuclear plant has faced multiple attacks since the US-Israeli war in Iran began, with previous strikes on March 17, March 24, and March 27. While no casualties were reported after the initial three strikes, the latest incident resulted in a fatality. The plant was developed by Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom. Hundreds of Russian specialists were at the plant before the war, and most have been evacuated, though about 50 Russian volunteers reportedly remain.
