AI's Potential for Improving Patient Care Highlighted
Positive Impact of AI in Healthcare
The American Hospital Association (AHA) highlighted that artificial intelligence (AI) is already having many significant positive impacts across numerous aspects of healthcare delivery. AI tools have demonstrated potential to improve outcomes, increase access, and reduce costs. Technologies like ambient listening assist with clinical documentation, chatbots help with scheduling and triaging, and algorithms support clinician interpretation of images, all contributing positively to hospitals and their patients.
Policy Recommendations for AI Adoption
In response to a request from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on accelerating AI adoption, the AHA submitted recommendations. They urged HHS to synchronize and leverage existing policy frameworks to avoid redundancy, as well as to remove regulatory barriers such as the patchwork of state privacy laws that indirectly impede AI tool development. The AHA also recommended policies to ensure the safe and effective use of AI, including clinician involvement in decision loops, consistent privacy and security standards, and post-deployment standards for ongoing integrity of AI tools.
