Woman Alleges Dowry Abuse in Delhi, India
Dowry Dispute Leads to Separation and Civil Case
Will Ripley, CNN's Senior International Correspondent, met with Priyanka and her lawyer in Delhi, India. Priyanka alleges she was kicked out of her in-laws' house for not providing enough dowry. She stated that her father arranged a grand wedding at a banquet hall and provided all necessary gold, silver, and jewelry. However, her husband and his family demanded more money and expensive gifts, including a house. Priyanka claims they severely punished her for not delivering these demands, leading to an ongoing civil case as she and her husband are now separated.
Husband Denies Abuse Amidst Conflicting Claims
Priyanka recounts that her husband physically abused her with a broom in the middle of the night during her pregnancy and believes she could have been killed. When contacted, her husband insisted he never physically abused her, stating, "They run these cases to harass me. I one hundred percent deny it." He did acknowledge that Priyanka's family covered most of their wedding expenses and gave him a motorcycle, but maintains his family never demanded a dowry. The differing accounts highlight a deep dispute between the parties.
