West Bank Settler Violence Surges, Calls for Investigation into American's Death
Escalation of Settler Violence in West Bank
In the West Bank village of Julud, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian residents on March 22nd, setting fire to shops and vehicles, bombing a local government building, and attempting to burn down a home with a family inside, leaving 'Death to Arabs' graffiti. These attacks followed the death of a young Israeli settler in a vehicle collision and are part of a broader surge in violence. According to Israeli human rights group Yesh Din, there were over 10 daily incidents of settler violence in the West Bank during the first 25 days of the current conflict, with 6 Palestinians shot dead by settlers and 5 more killed by Israeli soldiers.
American Citizen Killed, Accountability Demanded
In July, Saif Musallat, an American citizen, was beaten to death by settlers near his family's land in the West Bank, according to eyewitnesses. Ambassador Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, called for accountability for this 'criminal and terrorist act.' However, Saif's father, Kamal, states that no one has been arrested or charged. Israeli police indicated they had not yet received a criminal complaint for the murder. Kamal believes that settlers are exploiting the ongoing war to seize more land and that they operate with impunity, as evidenced by their willingness to attack journalists, even when aware of their identity.
