Ministry of Education Holds '16th e-ICON World Competition' to Boost AI and Digital Competencies
'e-ICON World Competition' Launched to Enhance AI and Digital Skills
The Ministry of Education and the Korea Digital Education Association are hosting the '16th e-ICON World Competition' starting March 31. This international competition brings together middle and high school students and teachers from Korea and developing countries to develop educational apps on themes from the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, the competition focuses on SDG 3, 'Good Health and Well-being.' Participants will gain artificial intelligence (AI) and digital competencies while experiencing international collaboration through app planning and development.
Expansion of Participation and Competition Format Changes
Since its inception in 2011, the 'e-ICON World Competition' has seen 1,285 students and teachers from 31 countries participate, developing 228 educational apps. The competition has gained significant international interest, with 141 teams applying in 2025. To further broaden participation, this year's competition has shifted its app development method from installable apps to web-browser-based apps. This change reflects recent advancements in AI and software (SW) technologies and aims to lower the development barrier, thereby increasing opportunities for both domestic and international middle and high school students to participate.
