Holy Week Exodus: Bus Terminals Experience Passenger Surge
Parañaque Terminal Faces Holy Week Rush
The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) is grappling with a massive influx of passengers heading home for Holy Week. Many commuters, whose last workday was Wednesday, are rushing to their provinces, causing considerable congestion at the terminal. Anjie Dondonilla reported attempting to buy a bus ticket to Legazpi since 10 AM, only to find other bus services sold out and eventually securing a 7 PM departure ticket. Similarly, Amy Supsup was unable to get an air-conditioned bus ticket and had to settle for an ordinary bus.
Operational Challenges and Security Measures
A PITX official stated that over 200,000 passengers were expected to pass through the terminal on Wednesday, with peak numbers anticipated after working hours from 5 PM onwards. However, some bus companies have not deployed additional buses due to the high cost of diesel, leading to fully booked routes, particularly for trips to Bicol. Meanwhile, the NCRPO (National Capital Region Police Office) conducted inspections at bus terminals to ensure public safety during the Holy Week exodus. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon clarified that road construction and repairs on national highways would be suspended for Holy Week, though EDSA rehabilitation efforts will continue 24/7, leveraging the reduced traffic. PITX has committed to securing additional bus units to prevent passenger stranding.
Anticipated Return Traffic Post-Holy Week
Looking ahead, officials anticipate another surge in passenger traffic on Sunday and Monday as those who traveled to the provinces return to Metro Manila after Holy Week.
